Today we enjoyed visiting Vancouver - along the Columbia River.
First we went to the Farmer's Market. We got a nice selection of Ranier cherries, Gala apples, Zee Lady peaches and green beans. All were reasonably priced and many samples were offered. The flower bouquets were beautiful in their summer jewel tones.
Toured Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. It was a different kind of fort as it was not built for military defense but for protection of supplies for the Hudson Bay Company. There were several volunteers to tell us about the fur trading, blacksmithing & kitchen for the fort.
Then we drove the Columbia River Drive and ate at Beaches Restaurant & Bar. We sat at a table outside on the deck. When the waitress asked if the table would be ok, I said "We're from Kansas so any view of the water is a bonus." Shortly after that, she returned to our table with a printed list of the daily specials. At the top was "For our VIP Friends from Kansas". Sure made us feel special.
We also drove further east along the river - boat ramps were lined with 20-30 boats waiting to enjoy the holiday weekend. We also visited the Pendleton Mill. They were open but not giving tours on the holiday.
