Halibut Fishing

Notice the concentration on Walt's face as he reels in a halibut. The captain came over to watch and said "get the harpoon". We thought he was joking; but when he could see the fish, he thought it weighed about 100 pounds. Walt worked for a long time to get the fish to the side of the boat. When the fish was alongside of the boat, the deck hand shot the harpoon but missed the fish. As he reloaded the harpoon, the fish flipped off the hook and swam away – far enough that they couldn’t harpoon him.

In the second photo, Captain Paul is holding the next halibut that Walt pulled in. It was a nice size to keep (maybe 25 pounds) but not nearly as nice as the halibut that escaped.

We both caught our limit (2). I had several small ones that we threw back – maybe 15 pounders. Walt caught two sand sharks – one close to 20 pounds. Those are NOT keepers!

The biggest fish caught was about 45 pounds. The third photo shows the entire catch for the day.

The captain & deckhand Kyle filleted the fish and we vacuum packed the fish. We’ll get them from Paul’s freezer tomorrow. We ended up with about 38 pounds of halibut meat. I’ll have to re-arrange but we have room in our RV freezer.
No salmon yet. We will head to Anchorage on Sunday so we may not get salmon
