Watson Lake to Whitehorse, Yukon

Again we drove about 300 miles on the Alaska Highway. Are you seeing a trend here? At some point 300 miles must have been determined to be the distance for a day’s travel. You can easily travel 300 miles in 6 to 9 hours allowing for rough roads and construction, wildlife spotting, scenic pull-outs for photos and a leisurely meal. Suddenly there is a population center, campgrounds, motels, restaurants, grocery stores and gas stations.

It was not a good day for wildlife spotting. We only saw a Brown Bear, a porcupine and a rabbit.

We crossed the Continental Divide again. We traveled alongside some beautiful lakes including Swan Lake, Teslin Lake and Marsh Lake. We crossed the Teslin River over the longest bridge on the Alaska Highway – 1,770 feet with a metal bridge deck.

At the end of the Teslin Bridge was Johnson’s Crossing. We stopped there for lunch and indulged in a Cinnamon Roll – our first since splurging at Polebridge, Montana.

We are camped at the Pioneer Campground at Whitehorse. Whitehorse is the provincial capital of the Yukon. It only has a population of 23,000. We have already made our trip to Canadian Tire – it’s like Wal-Mart, Home Depot and Bed, Bath & Beyond rolled into one. We never pass up a chance to visit Canadian Tire.

Today is the summer solstice. Tomorrow is the longest daylight of the year.

The pictures are beatiful but that cinnamon roll is kind of cruel don't you think! Enjoy and have fun! MEL
